Where are the ORIGINAL manuscripts?

I've never seen this question asked or addressed. Where are the original, ancient manuscripts used to make our extant copies in the 8th century and after?

Earlier, I posted this extract from Civilisation: A Personal View by Kenneth Clark:

Nobody (I know of) disputes what happened earlier, or that we are left with just purported copies of the many originals.

So, monastic scriptoria were tasked (by Alquin, under the authority of Charles I) to collect and make good copies of ancient manuscripts. They did this and so did succeeding generations of monks. Great! But what did they do with the originals?

This question must be answered. Perhaps an Inquisition would help?
